A walk in Obi Obi Gorge at Maleny

The Obi Obi Gorge is an easily accessed section of the Sunshine Coast hinterland just down from Maleny.  There's a car park near Baroon Pocket Dam on Narrows Road and from there it is only a short walk down to the picturesque Obi Obi gorge. These photos were taken after an extended period of dry weather but it's also worth seeing this and the waterfalls in the area after a good rainfall.

If you're feeling like a longer walk continue on the Baroon Pocket Dam to Baroon Lookout track which is just under 7 km return.  The walk is suitable for most ages and fitness levels but the usual preparation and precautions are recommended.

The Narrows Lookout gives a good view over the gorge and further along, there's a boardwalk in place to protect the habitat of the rare and tiny (2.5cm) hip-pocket frog.  Walk up to the Baroon Lookout from the gully for views of the gorge, dam and catchment.

Near the track entry and around the dam are toilet facilities, picnic shelters and barbeques.  If you feel like treating yourself Secrets on the Lake is located nearby and has a wonderful cafe with a log fire which was perfect for thawing out on a winters afternoon with a hot drink, clean restrooms and lovely outlook.  The food looked great but we'd had our lunch so I'll be heading back there soon to try that out.

If you are feeling really energetic this section is also part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, a 4 day, 58km track with bush campsites.  The great thing about it though for those of us with less inclination to tackle so much at once is that there are multiple entry and exit points so the full track can be broken down and done as day walks with a moderate level of fitness and commitment, even better if you can organise a pick up or drop off to allow one way walking.
